U.S. #C116 commemorates Junipero Serra, who was born on the Spanish island of Mallorca in 1713. Traveling with a group of Franciscan friars, he worked among the Indians and traveled on an expedition along the California coast. He founded a mission at what is now San Diego. Under his guidance, eight more missions were founded. These missions formed a base for the settlement of California. Today, over 60% of the state’s population lives in the areas surrounding the old Spanish missions.
