This set of two Colorano Silk Covers pay tribute to Scott Carpenter, the second American to orbit the Earth.  The postmark marks the date of Carpenter's death on October 10, 2013.

In 1959, Malcolm Scott Carpenter became one of seven astronauts chosen to be part of NASA's Project Mercury program.  On May 24, 1962, astronaut he took off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, in his Aurora 7 spacecraft.  Carpenter orbited the Earth three times before reentering Earth's atmosphere and splashing down in the ocean.  

After his NASA career, Carpenter became an aquanaut with the US Navy and spent almost a month living on the ocean floor.
