Silk Cover Marks Launch of Mars Research Spacecraft

MAVEN was launched on an Atlas V rocket and went into orbit around Mars almost ten months later. It was designed to study the atmosphere around the Red Planet and the effect solar wind has had on it. The mission was originally scheduled to last two years but has been extended many times.
