The first country to ratify the convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage was the United States.  This agreement was an effort to define and conserve the world’s heritage.  It was adopted by UNESCO in 1972.   By 2003, 20 World Heritage sites had been listed in the United States.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, on the F.S.0,90 stamp, covers more than 800 square miles in North Carolina and Tennessee.  The thick forest releases water vapor and oily residues.  These settle in a smoke-like haze in the valleys.

The F.s.1,30 stamp features Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.  Established in 1872, it was the world’s first national park.  It contains rivers and waterfalls, hot springs and geysers, canyons and forests.  It is well known for its abundant wildlife.
