2003 World Heritage
United States

The first country to ratify the convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage was the United States.  This agreement was an effort to define and conserve the world’s heritage.  It was adopted by UNESCO in 1972.   By 2003, 20 World Heritage sites had been listed in the United States.

Yosemite National Park is on the 37¢ stamp.  Formed by glaciers, the park is located in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains and contains peaks and valleys, sheer cliffs and waterfalls, and the giant sequoia trees – the world’s largest living things.

The Hawaii Volcanoes erupt on the 60¢ stamp.  The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the site of two of the most active volcanoes in the world, Mauna Loa and Kilauea.
