Presidential Dollars
The US Mint began the Presidential Dollar Coin Program in 2007 to honor former presidents of the United States. The Presidential Dollar coins are known for their larger, more dramatic artwork than previous Dollar coins as well as their edge inscriptions detailing year of minting/issue, "E Pluribus Unum," and mint mark. The "heads" side of each coin pictures a portrait of a former US president. The "tails" side pictures an image of the Statue of Liberty. In December 2011, the US Mint suspended production of Presidential Dollar coins. However, after the passing of George H.W. Bush in 2018, the Mint produced a new Presidential Dollar coin with his image in 2020.
*Note: This section also includes specially enhanced Presidential Dollar coins picturing presidents that are not yet part of the official series. These coins are a nice complement as it will likely be some time before these presidents are pictured.
