This Flags of Our Nation Coin Cover features the Delaware stamp from the Flags of Our Nation Series, two uncirculated state quarters, and a cachet, or picture, that reflects the history of the state.

 

Despite its status as the first state of the Union, Delaware didn’t have an official state flag until July 24, 1913. Part of the 2008 Flags of Our Nation stamp series, the Delaware state flag stamp includes the state motto, “Liberty and Independence.” The motto was added to the seal of Delaware in 1847 and was likely provided by the Society of the Cincinnati. Founded in 1783 by officers of the Revolutionary War, the Society of the Cincinnati aimed to maintain the ideals and fellowship of those who fought for American Independence. The motto urged citizens of the state to do “everything to save the Republic.”

 

Issued in 1999, the Delaware State Quarter shows Continental Congress delegate Caesar Rodney. On July 1, 1776, suffering from asthma and cancer, Rodney rode his horse 80 miles through thundershowers and severe heat to cast the deciding vote that established America’s independence. Rodney held more public offices than any other Delaware citizen and was also a soldier, judge, and speaker in the Delaware Assembly.

 

The 2008 Delaware Flags of Our Nation Coin First Day Cover pictures 19th century mills along the Brandywine Creek. The first mill on the Brandywine was built in 1687 by Swedish colonist Tyman Stidham near Wilmington, Delaware. Gilpin’s mill, in north Wilmington, was the country’s first paper mill.
