John F. Kennedy Facts
J.F.K. was the first President to hold a press conference on television and also took part in the first joint radio-television broadcast of a U.S. presidential debate. The debate took place on September 26, 1960 and was against Richard M. Nixon.
Kennedy was also the first president that was a boy scout and the first Roman Catholic president.
He was the youngest-elected President, but Teddy Roosevelt was the youngest serving President (he was not elected President when he succeeded President William McKinley after his assassination).
His 1957 book Profiles in Courage won a Pulitzer Prize. He was the only President to be awarded this high honor.
Kennedy was the first President to have served in the U.S. Navy. He was also the first U.S. President born in the 20th century.
One of J.F.K.’s favorite poems was Alan Seeger’s “I Have a Rendezvous With Death.”
When he was in high school, John F. Kennedy was voted “Most likely to become President.”
The President consistently swam two times a day in the White House pool which he had heated to 90 degrees. He also had a floor-to-ceiling painting on the wall of a Massachusetts waterfront.
Kennedy was the first President to appoint his brother to a cabinet post. In fact, while his brother Robert was Attorney General, his brother Ted was a U.S. Senator. This was the first time that three relatives held such high government positions at the same time.
J.F.K. was the youngest President to die in office at the age of 46.
