In 1916 the Austrians took control, and late in 1918, it united with Serbia. During WW II Montenegro became an Italian protectorate, and from 1943-45 it was occupied by Germany. The Germans used overprinted Yugoslavia stamps. After the war Montenegro united with Serbia. For a time overprinted Italian-era stamps were used, but after 1945, Yugoslavian issues became valid.
