Seldom-Seen U.S. #120 on Cover Can Be Yours

Includes a 1869 24¢ Declaration of Independence stamp with rich colors and proof-like impressions, tied by a circle of wedges cancel, "San Francisco Cal. Registered Nov. 24" circular datestamp on legal-size blue cover to Downieville Cal, ms. registry number, pencil "H. Molineaux Box 1333" return address.

An extremely fine example of the 24¢ 1869 Pictorial on a registered cover from San Francisco.  Only 23 of the 76 recorded 24¢ covers are domestic usages.  This is certainly among the finest in terms of quality and usage.

The majority of 24¢ 1869 domestic usages are courthouse covers with unsightly docketing and faults.  This cover is exceptional for the usage between California post offices and the condition of the stamp and overall appearance.  The 24¢ pays the triple 3¢ postage plus 15¢ registration fee.

Interesting History Behind Heavy Cancels...

The 20¢ stamp on this cover is a great example of heavy cancels on higher value stamps around its time of issue.  This was done to due Post Office concerns about reuse of postage stamps.  If a heavier cancel was used, it was much harder for people to remove the cancel and be able to reuse it instead of purchasing a new stamp.  It's fun to look back on all the ways the Post Office prevented reuse of stamps in the early days.
