What IS the Photo Ark project?

The Photo Ark project was initiated by Joel Sartore in 2005 to answer the self-imposed question: “How can I get people to care that we could lose half of all species by the turn of the next century?”

Joel decided to begin “a series of portraits, made as simply and cleanly as possible, [to] give us all a chance to look animals directly in the eye and see that there’s beauty, grace, and intelligence in the other creatures we share the planet with.” (He named the project “Photo Ark” after the famous biblical story of Noah’s Ark.)

Joel determined that approximately 12,000 different species of animal are in human care across the globe. He decided to begin the monumental task of photographing all of them. The project has been underway for 16 years, and Joel estimates he has about another decade to go.

How did these beautiful photographs end up on stamps?

You’ll get single stamps, blocks, and even miniature sheets. Species pictured include monkeys, elephants, big cats, reptiles, amphibians, and lots more.
