2000 55th Anniversary
These stamps are based on photographs taken during construction of the United Nations headquarters in New York City. Each souvenir sheet shows a photograph taken in October of 1949 of workers cheering the UN flag as it was unfurled atop the framework of the Secretariat Building. Completed in 1952, by 1956, the General Assembly Building needed renovating to accommodate new members. The 33¢ stamp is a February 1956 photo of workmen as they remove decorative disks from the General Assembly Hall. The September 1951 photo on the 55¢ stamp shows the permanent headquarters of the UN. Visible are the East River, low Conference Building, Secretariat Building, and the incomplete General Assembly Hall.
