The tenth installment of the Endangered Species Series, which began in 1993, was issued April 4, 2002.  This series spotlights the need for protection of endangered species throughout the world.

The 34¢ stamps show the San Esteban Island chuckwalla, the cheetah, the bighorn sheep, and Hofmann’s two-toed sloth.  Bighorn sheep are found in the Rocky Mountains of North America.  The males are well known for their head-to-head challenges of one another during mating season.  Trophy hunting, human encroachment on their habitat, and disease and competition from livestock threaten these animals.
