UNG549-52 – Endangered Species
Offices in Geneva

In 2012, the United Nations Postal Administration issued its 20th set of Endangered Species stamps.  Since the series began in 1993, the goal has been to raise awareness of the need to protect endangered species around the globe.

Pictured on the Geneva stamps are the Siberian tiger, Painted tiger parrot, Green iguana, and Golden-crowned sifaka.  Green iguanas are one of the few iguanas to still have a parietal eye (also called a third eye) on top of their heads.  It allows the iguanas to sense changes in light, dark, and movement.  This is especially important when being followed by a predator from above.
