Social Summit

When the nations of the world gathered after World War II to create the U.N. Charter, social issues were very much a concern.  In the Charter’s preamble, the document’s creators expressed their desire to: “promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom.”  During its 50th anniversary year, the U.N. brought special attention to these goals through the World Summit for Social Development.  As a result of the Social Summit, a formal declaration and program of action was endorsed by the world leaders who attended the conference.  These documents herald a new global effort to attack poverty, build solidarity, and create jobs.  The Social Summit increased worldwide attention, renewed commitment, revitalized efforts, and reinvigorated partnership in an effort to give top priority to social progress.
