In 2019, the United Nations celebrated the 100th anniversary of the International Labor Organization (the oldest UN specialized agency) with five stamp designs from each UN office. The stamp designs picture people from all walks of life performing different jobs, fighting for a better workplace, and more. These images were created by illustrator Owen Smith who said he was inspired by Great Depression-era murals that "depict the dignity of labor."
The International Labor Organization was formed in 1919 under the Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I. The organization became a specialized agency of the United Nations in 1946. From the beginning, the organization has fought to uphold a certain standard of working environmet for employees around the world. This includes ensuring equal opportunities for all people regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, cultural beliefs, or any other differences. As of 2019, there were 187 member states in the International Labor Organization.
