Why the stamp was issued: To recall the popular Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, “Cats,” and its historic run on Broadway. (For a time, it held the record for longest-running show in Broadway history, but that record was eclipsed by another Andrew Lloyd Webber musical – “The Phantom of the Opera” – in 2023.)
About the stamp design: Pictures artwork by Robert Rodriguez based on a photograph of the production’s original Rum Tum Tugger actor, Terrence Mann. Includes the following text on the back: “Based on children’s poems by T.S. Eliot, the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical “Cats” first appeared on Broadway October 7, 1982. Wildly popular with people of all ages, it has become the longest-running show in Broadway history.”
First Day City: The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at Kennedy Space Center in Titusville, Florida.
About the Celebrate the Century series: The USPS launched the Celebrate the Century series in 1998 to mark the end of the 20th century and herald the arrival of the 21st. The series includes 10 sheets of 15 stamps (150 in total), with each honoring important moments from a different decade (1900s, 10s, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s). At the time of completion, it was the longest and most ambitious commemorative stamp series in US history.
History the stamp represents: The original production of the international hit musical “Cats” premiered May 11, 1981, at the New London Theatre in England. The first show was staed in the United States on October 7, 1982. Performances of “Cats” have been running ever since, making it the most successful musical of all time. On June 19, 1997, after almost 15 years and 6,138 shows, “Cats” became the longest-running Broadway show ever up to that point.
“Cats” is based on the 14 poems of T.S. Eliot’s “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.” Legendary composer Andrew Lloyd Weber created the music for this incredibly popular show. Its best-known song is “Memory.” Weber also created the music for “Jesus Christ Superstar” (1971), “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” (1973), “Evita” (1978), and “The Phantom of the Opera” (1986).
This story chronicles a gathering of special “Jellicle” cats, who meet in a junkyard to choose which of them will be reborn. The characters have curious names like Old Deuteronomy, Jennyanydots (The Old Gumbie Cat), Bustopher Jones, The Rum Tum Tugger, Grizabella (The Glamour Cat), Gus (The Theatre Cat), Mungojerrie, Mr. Mistoffolees, and Rumpleteazer.
