About the National Marine Sanctuaries set:  A set of 16 mint stamps picturing photographs from America’s National Marine Sanctuary System.  These stamps were issued to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Marine Sanctuary System and the many creatures and historic relics protected by it.

History the stamp represents:  The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is located off the southwestern tip of Florida and includes 3,800 square miles of protected waters.  It includes part of the Dry Tortugas up to the area where Dry Tortugas National Park begins.  The national marine sanctuary protects North America’s only coral barrier reef, ecologically important seagrass beds and mangroves, and historically significant shipwrecks.

Over 6,000 species make their home in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.  This includes fish, marine mammals, birds, and more.  One interesting species sometimes spotted in the region is the red-footed booby.  This large seabird is the smallest member of the booby and gannet family and can be identified by its bright red legs.  The species can be found in breeding colonies on tropical islands, but spends a majority of its life out to sea.  This makes it a rare sight and a bragging point for any birder who manages to spot one.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature has classified the red-footed booby as a species of least concern, but populations are in decline.  Protected areas like Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary are critical to the preservation of this and many other threatened marine species.
