First Day City:  First Day of Issue Ceremony was held in Cleveland, Ohio, at The Great American Stamp Show.

About the Life Magnified Set:  These 20 stamps were issued to showcase life undetectable by the human eye alone.  All 20 stamps picture photographs taken using special techniques and the aid of a microscope.  The set celebrates the beauty and complexity of microscopic organisms and parts of organisms, the study of which have had various impacts on humans.

History the stamp represents:  Hair is what distinguishes mammals from other animals.  It insulates from hot and cold temperatures, provides camouflage, gives added protection against predators, acts as a sensory organ, distinguishes between male and female animals, creates colorful displays, and more.

Human hair has some similarities to animal hair, but there are also some marked differences.  For example, hair shafts of both humans and animals consist of the cuticle (outermost layer), cortex (secondary layer), and medulla (innermost layer).  However, the precise structures of these parts differ quite a bit.  Animal hair has a thicker medulla to allow for better defense against predators.  It also has a variety of different scale patterns.  The scales of human hair tend to be flattened and narrow in shape (imbricate) while animal hair scales may resemble flower petals (spinous) or a stack of crowns (coronal).

The way animal hair grows is different, too.  It stops growing once it reaches a certain length, while human hair does not.  A human hair is also one color from root to tip while an animal hair may be several different colors.  The similarities and differences between humans and animals can be fascinating.  They are not always obvious with the naked eye, but when you look under a microscope, there is much to discover.
