Why the stamps were issued:  For use by bulk mail users to cover the Presorted First Class Mail Rate.

About the stamp designs:  Each stamp pictures a different bridge that has become a significant landmark to its local community.  Some are modern, others are historic, and they range in use from car-carrying to pedestrian only.  All four stamps picture existing photographs of the bridges.

First Day City:  The stamps were issued on August 24th in Portland, Connecticut, not far from the Arrigoni Bridge.  There was no official First Day of Issue Ceremony, though the Connecticut Cover Club held an unofficial one at the Brownstone Intermediate School in Portland.

History the stamp represents:  There are countless bridges in the United States.  Some are massive feats of engineering that carry tens of thousands of cars per day.  Others are small, scenic footbridges that allow pedestrians to enjoy the beauty of nature.  Some are known worldwide, while others are known only to locals.

The earliest bridges in history were simple structures like fallen trees or stepping stones.  Eventually, wooden boards were used, followed by rock, iron, and steel.  Some of the oldest simple bridges that still exist today are over 6,000 years old.  In any era or civilization, the ability to transport people and goods is one of the most important aspects of a successful society.  Building sturdy, long-lasting bridges over obstacles such as rivers or canyons has always been essential for speedy and efficient transportation.

In 2023, the US Postal Service issued four new Forever stamps picturing different American bridges, continuing a long tradition of bridges on stamps.  A few of the previously honored bridges include the massive Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, Golden Gate Bridge, and Mackinac Bridge.  Each has a unique history that makes it special.  Some were constructed several decades ago, while others are fairly new.  They are reminders of days gone by and construction techniques that laid the foundation for modern innovations.
