1999 Proof Set Includes First Coins in 50 State Quarters Program
The quarters in this set are the first five in a program highlighting each of the 50 US states on the reverse (tails) side of the Washinton quarter. The states honored were the first five to ratify the Constitution and join the Union.
In addition to the quarters, this set also contains the four other denominations produced in 1999. All the proof coins manufactured at the San Francisco Mint. The small “S” mintmark can be found on each coin.
Proof coin sets are produced by the US mint in San Francisco using a process that brings out the beauty of each coin’s design. The dies and planchets (the metal disks that will become coins) are polished before the coin is struck. This gives the fields (blank areas) a mirrored look and the image a frosted effect. Proof coins are struck twice, giving the coin a sharper design and rims. The proof sets are packaged at the mint and display America’s coins at their best. Each set is only produced for one year, so the supply is limited.
