Elvis’s First Single

“Heartbreak Hotel” is often considered Elvis’s first song to hit number one on the charts.  While it’s true it was his first song to hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100, it was “I Forgot to Remember to Forget” that first reached number one on a different Billboard chart.

Elvis recorded “I Forgot to Remember to Forget” in July 1955, for Sun Studios.  It was released that August and featured in Billboard as a “Spotlight” pick and as one of “This Week’s Best Buys.”  At the time, Billboard had three categories for each of the genres – Best Sellers in Stores, Most Played in Juke Boxes, and Most Played by Jockeys. By November, it was in the top ten of all three of these categories on the Country and Western charts.

When RCA purchased Elvis’ contract that month, they also got the rights to all his songs and re-released them on their label.  Interestingly, “Heartbreak Hotel” helped “I Forgot to Remember to Forget” reach number one.

On February 11, 1956, Elvis appeared several times on the Dorsey Brothers’ Stage Show and played “Heartbreak Hotel.”  That performance led the song to skyrocket, but also increased demand for his only other record at the time – “I Forgot to Remember to Forget.”  On February 25, 1956, “I Forgot to Remember to Forget” hit number one on the Country Best Sellers in Stores chart and remained there for two weeks.  It then topped the Most Played in Juke Boxes chart and stayed there for five weeks.  In all, it spent 40 straight weeks on these charts, ending its reign on June 23.
