CZ129 – Canal Channel – After
This stamp was issued on August 15, 1939, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal. The series contains eight scenes before and after the canal was completed.
The stamp pictures the passenger and freight vessel, SS Santa Clara, traveling towards the Caribbean on August 16, 1930. Two steam shovels met from opposite directions at this same spot in 1913.
The 12¢ stamp had no specific use at the time it was issued. It was often used in combination with other stamps to make a rate. Only about 66,000 stamps were sold and the rest were destroyed.
