Mint Souvenir Sheet Marks 75th Anniversary of Guernica

Issued in 2012 by Mozambique, this dramatic mint souvenir sheet pictures the German bombing of Guernica, Spain and part of Pablo Picasso’s famous painting named after the town.  The bombing of Guernica was carried out by the German Luftwaffe at the request of Spain’s nationalist government.  The bombing killed up to 1,650 civilians, sparking worldwide outrage.

Picasso was commissioned by Spanish rulers of the time to create a mural for the Spanish display at the Paris International Exposition at the 1937 World’s Fair.  Painted in black, white, and gray, Guernica shows the suffering endured during the bombing.  Picasso intended for the mural to stand as a lasting memorial to the atrocities of war.
