Sierra Leone Sheet Honors Fallen Ukrainian Pilot
After Russia began a war against Ukraine in early 2022, countries and individuals from around the world showed their support in many different ways, including with the issue of postage stamps. This sheet from Sierra Leone includes four designs honoring fallen Ukrainian pilot Colonel Oksanchenko. Oskanchenko was a colonel in the Ukrainian Air Force and answered the call again in 2022 when Russia attacked. He was tragically killed at the age of 53 by a Russian S-400 missile during the Battle of Kyiv and was posthumously awarded the Order of Gold Star. The stamps include images of Oksanchenko's Sukhoi Su-27 plane as well as images of the pilot in his early years. The Ukrainian flag can be seen in the background of each stamp.
