# UNG95 - 1980 Peacekeeping S/S
This issue commemorates the 35th anniversary of the signing of the U.N. Charter. Some of the important dates in the United Nations’ first 35 years are: 1949 – the Netherlands granted independence to Indonesia as a result of U.N. efforts; 1953 – North Korea and the U.N. signed a truce; 1964 – the Security Council approved a peace-keeping force for Cyprus; and 1965 – UNICEF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The U.N. has been successful in both peace-keeping and humanitarian efforts.
