2020 Earth Day Stamps Highlight Environmental Artists

The 2020 Earth Day stamps highlight the talents of six different artists chosen because their “works are influenced by environmental issues.”  The stamps, two from each issuing office, were released on April 22, 2020.  This day was set aside as Earth Day in 1970.

The €0.85 stamp issued by the Vienna UN office pictures the work of American artist Paul Villinski, who uses discarded materials to create his pieces.  Butterflies are a common theme of Villinski’s work, as shown by his collage Lepidopterist, 2017 featured on the stamp.  He used discarded aluminum cans, steel, and soot to create it.

The €1.35 stamp shows a compostable dress made by Canadian artist Nicole Dextras.  It was part of her Little Green Dress project, where she made 21 dresses using leaves, flowers, and berries.
