Highlights:

Madame C.J. Walker – 32¢:  The 21st installment in the long-running Black Heritage Series features Madame C.J. Walker.  Madame Walker started her own business selling cosmetics and hair treatments for black women, making her the first black female millionaire.

Remember the Maine – Early in 1898, the United States sent the USS Maine to Havana Harbor to protect American interests from the growing conflict in Cuba.  On February 15, the Maine mysteriously exploded, killing approximately 260 servicemen.  This event, coupled with the sensationalized journalism of Joseph Pulitzer, would soon lead to the Spanish-American War.

Cinco De Mayo – The third installment in the series of Holiday Celebration Stamps is a joint issue between the United States and Mexico.  It celebrates the Mexican holiday of the same name, which means “May 5th.”  This holiday is held on the anniversary of the victory of the Battle of Puebla, fought between Mexican and French troops over war debts on May 5, 1862.

Sylvester & Tweety – These Warner Bros. characters have starred in over 41 cartoons and several feature-length films.  This stamp joins Bugs Bunny as the second in the Warner Bros. series.

Alfred Hitchcock – The third subject honored in the Legends of Hollywood series, Hitchcock rose to fame producing and directing suspense films.  Directing such classics as Vertigo, Psycho, and Rebecca, which won the Oscar for Best Picture, Hitchcock gained a reputation as the master of suspense.  Interestingly, Hitchcock was also famous for making cameo appearances in his movies.  This was also the first U.S. stamp with a die-cut silhouette of its subject.

Giving and Sharing – This stamp honors philanthropy.  The design, featuring a bee and a flower, illustrates the ultimate sharing relationship.  When the bee collects pollen for nourishment, it also pollinates other flowers, ensuring there will be more flowers in the future.

Organ and Tissue Donation – After years of lobbying by organ recipients and other concerned individuals, the U.S. Postal Service issued a stamp promoting organ and tissue donation.  The First Day ceremony was held at Ohio State University during the U.S. Transplant Games.  These games are held in order to call attention to the plight of the nearly 50,000 people who are awaiting an organ transplant.
