The 2012 Sport for Peace stamps were issued to commemorate the London 2012 Paralympic Games.  These games are held every four years, like the Olympic Games to promote “peace, mutual understanding, and goodwill” – similar goals shared by the United Nations.  The London 2012 Paralympic Games were the largest to date, with 4,302 athletes from 164 nations competing in 503 events in 20 sports.

The 2012 Sport for Peace stamps launch event was held at the Vienna International Centre.  Among the events of the day was a table tennis exhibition between members of the Austrian Paralympic Team and the U.N. table tennis club.

The two Geneva stamps picture athletics and archery.  Athletics events have been included in the Paralympic Games since the first program in Rome in 1960.  Archery has been a part of all Paralympic Games since the first one in 1960.  It was also part of the first Stoke Mandeville Game in 1948, the forerunner of the modern Paralympic Games.
