The 2012 Sport for Peace stamps were issued to commemorate the London 2012 Paralympic Games.  These games are held every four years, like the Olympic Games to promote “peace, mutual understanding, and goodwill” – similar goals shared by the United Nations.  The London 2012 Paralympic Games were the largest to date, with 4,302 athletes from 164 nations competing in 503 events in 20 sports.

The 2012 Sport for Peace stamps launch event was held at the Vienna International Centre.  Among the events of the day was a table tennis exhibition between members of the Austrian Paralympic Team and the U.N. table tennis club.

The Vienna stamps picture wheelchair basketball and table tennis.  Wheelchair basketball has been a part of the Paralympics since the first games in 1960.  The sport began as a rehabilitation program for World War II veterans.  Today it is played in over 80 countries.  Table tennis has also been included in the Paralympics since 1960.  With 300 athletes competing in 29 medal events, it is one of the largest sports at the games.
