About the WPA Posters set:  Includes 10 different stamp designs picturing different WPA posters from the era of FDR’s New Deal.  Issued to celebrate the Workers Projects Administration and its contributions to the economy and American culture.

History the stamps represent:  Franklin Roosevelt had always been interested in nature and conservation.  So when he became president, some of his most expansive New Deal programs targeted America’s most treasured natural sites – the national parks.

Roosevelt took two major steps toward improving national parks in 1933.  First, he added all the national monuments, battlefields, and memorials to the National Park System.  And second, he created the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).  The CCC was one of the most wide-reaching programs of Roosevelt’s New Deal.  It put millions of able-bodied young men to work improving our national parks.  They cleared trails, planted trees, and built bridges, visitor centers, and other structures.

And Roosevelt did not stop with the CCC.  During the course of his presidency, he created 140 national wildlife refuges, 29 national forests, and 29 national parks and monuments.  After he created the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Art Agency, talented artists were brought in to design inspiring posters that aimed to draw Americans to these new and improved national parks.

In a matter of years, Roosevelt and the CCC transformed America’s National Parks.  And the public loved it, with attendance soaring five-fold to over 15 million visitors in 1939 alone.
