About the Star Wars Droids set:  Includes 10 stamps commemorating the robot-like characters known as droids who are found throughout the Star Wars franchise.  Also indicate Disney and Lucasfilm’s promotion of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning and “Star Wars: Force for Change,” plus global nonprofit organization “FIRST” (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology).

History the stamp represents:  The treatment of droids in Star Wars is a major theme throughout the franchise’s many story lines.  Droids are created by humans, but they often develop their own personalities independent of their programming.  This leads to the question of whether or not droids are sentient.  That is, do they feel emotions and gain knowledge the same way humans and other species do?

There have been countless examples of Star Wars droids changing personalities over their lives depending on their circumstances.  One such example was the tiny droid known as D-O.  He was once owned by a Sith assassin who treated him horribly, giving the droid a fear of humans.  Eventually, D-O was found on Pasaana by BB-8.  Once reactivated, D-O took an immediate liking to the larger droid and accompanied him.  It took a bit of time for him to trust BB-8’s human companion Rey, but eventually D-O allowed her to repair him.

D-O went from being a fearful droid owned by a cruel and abusive master, to an excitable, friendly droid who helped the Resistance in his small way.  This suggests that treating droids better can result in improved performance, meaning they are more similar to humans than we may think.  This brings up the issue of droid rights and discrimination, a direct mirroring of similar issues with race and gender in the real world.
