First Day City:  The virtual First Day of Issue Ceremony was held on May 4th (celebrated as “May the 4th Be With You” by Star Wars fans) with First Day of Issue Postmark from Nicasio, California, the city which is home to Skywalker Ranch, home of Lucasfilm founder George Lucas.

About the Star Wars Droids set:  Includes 10 stamps commemorating the robot-like characters known as droids who are found throughout the Star Wars franchise.  Also indicate Disney and Lucasfilm’s promotion of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning and “Star Wars: Force for Change,” plus global nonprofit organization “FIRST” (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology).

History the stamp represents:  An interesting concept in Star Wars is the idea that droids can be reprogrammed.  This means, no matter what their original purpose, they can change and perform a different task.  Some droids have even switched sides, transforming from villain to hero.

One example of a droid being reprogrammed and joining the side of the heroes is K-2SO.  He is one of the main characters in the film Rogue One, along with Rebellion pilot Cassian Andor.  K-2SO was originally a security droid created by the Galactic Empire to serve alongside storm troopers and such.  When K-2SO was found and reprogrammed by Cassian, he became an extremely useful member of the Rebellion.

K-2SO’s transition from Empire to Rebellion gave him a new mission and a new personality.  The Hollywood Reporter described him as “a more useful, resourceful, and sarcastic version of C-3PO.”  Despite his sarcasm and tendency to become comic relief, the Rebellion couldn’t have completed certain difficult missions without him.  In fact, he sacrificed himself so they could obtain the design plans for the Death Star.

Today, many fans like to discuss how qualities of Star Wars droids can completely change based on programming.  K-2SO is a prime example.  He went from agent of the enemy to a Rebellion hero without whom the Empire may never have been defeated.
