Elvis First Meets “Man in Black”

In September 1954, Elvis was a local star among teenage girls in Memphis.  His first record was barely two months old, and he was playing small gigs around town.

One of Elvis’ friends, who worked in a new department store, helped get him hired to play at the store’s grand opening on September 9.  There, on a makeshift stage on a flatbed truck, Elvis played to a group of 200 to 300, mostly teenage girls.

Among the people in attendance that day was 22-year-old Johnny Cash, fresh out of the Air Force.  Cash and his wife Vivian enjoyed the show and introduced themselves to Elvis afterwards.  He invited them to his next gig at the Eagles’ Nest Bar.

In his later years, Cash fondly remembered both that initial meeting and Elvis’ performance at the Eagles’ Nest.  Though there were less than 15 people in the club, Elvis and his band played their hearts out.  Cash was impressed with his guitar playing, and wasn’t bothered by the fact that he played his local hits – “That’s All Right, Mama” and “Blue Moon of Kentucky” – several times that night.  The pair spoke again after the show, mostly talking about music, and remained friends for a while after that.  Whenever they played the same shows, Cash always took the opportunity to watch Elvis from the wings.  As he recalled “We all did.  He was that charismatic.”
