Zanzibar issued its own stamps starting in the late 1800s when it became a British Protectorate. Many early issues were overprinted British India stamps, but by the early 1900s, they had beautifully engraved original designs like this one.
The dhow design reflects the maritime heritage of Zanzibar, which was a major trade hub for spices, ivory, and slaves between Africa, the Middle East, and India.
