About the American Women Quarters Program

The American Women Quarters Program is a multi-year tribute to women from diverse backgrounds, races, ethnicities, and parts of the US.  They were chosen for their contributions to the abolition of slavery, civil rights activism, roles in government, as well as expertise in science, the arts, humanities and much more.

From 2022 through 2025, five new coins were released each year.  Each coin features a distinctive reverse design honoring an American woman, along with her name, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.”   The obverse side showcases a new design of George Washington.

Anna May Wong (1905-1961) was born in the Chinatown area of Los Angeles.  Her birth name was Wong Liu Tsong, but her family also gave her the English name Anna May.  When she was nine years old, she decided she wanted to be a movie star.  In 1919, she landed a part as an extra in her first film.  Two years later, she landed a larger role.  Wong was given her first leading role when she was 17 in the silent movie The Toll of the Sea.  It was the first full-length movie made by Technicolor.

Though Wong was a rising star, she faced discrimination because of her Chinese heritage.  She moved to Europe, where she had greater success.  Anna May starred in her first talking film in 1930 and performed in a German opera and a stage play.  After a few years, she was promised leading roles if she returned to the US.  Wong did return but was again cast in stereotypical Asian roles.  She continued to persevere and in the 1950s she worked on the TV show, The Gallery of Madame Liu-Tsong, becoming the first Asian-American to lead a US television show.  During her long career, Anna May Wong appeared in over 60 movies while advocating for better acting roles for Asian-Americans.
