When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again

The song “When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again” was written by Wiley Walker and Gene Sullivan in 1940, and they recorded it the following year.  The idea for the song came to Sullivan one night when he was driving through west Texas during a full moon.

Though the song was a regional hit for Walker and Sullivan, it was not well known around the country until Elvis sang it.  Recorded in September 1956, this song was part of a three-day session at Radio Recorders in Hollywood.  The songs produced at this time became Presley’s second studio album, Elvis.

Elvis worked with guitarist Scotty Moore, bass player Bill Black, and drummer D.J. Fontana, with The Jordaniares providing background vocals.  The rising singing star showed his talents as a record producer by choosing the songs, deciding which take would be used, and making other important decisions.

The album was released in October and quickly climbed the charts.  It spent four weeks at number one on Billboard’s Top Pop Albums chart.  This was Elvis’ second album to top the charts in the same year.  Elvis sang “When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again” during his third performance on The Ed Sullivan Show.
