Historic Morgan Silver Dollars
“The King of American Coins”
Produced at four US Mints between 1878 and 1904, the Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most popular old US coins. It was the first silver dollar minted after the Coin Act of 1873, which had demonetized silver.
The vast quantities of silver collected from the Comstock Lode and other mines had led some to worry that the market of price of silver would exceed what the US Mint could pay for it. So, the Coinage Act of 1873 halted the use of silver as currency.
However, Western miners and free-silver activists lobbied Congress and got a new act passed in 1878. That act required the Treasury to purchase up to $4 million worth of silver for coins every month. The first Morgan silver dollar was produced just one week after the law was passed! The Morgan dollar is the “King” of American coins for its size, silver content, and role in helping the US expand West across the frontier.
Struck in 90% silver, it’s the most valuable silver coin of its era. The coin is named after the US Mint chief engraver George T. Morgan, who designed the coin. The obverse shows the head of Liberty, based on Philadelphia resident Anna Willess Williams. The reverse pictures an eagle with outstretched wings carrying arrows and an olive branch.
With this neat collection of 10 coins, you’ll get Morgan dollars from the early years of production in fine to very fine condition. These coins have been carefully preserved for decades, and you can join in keeping their legacy alive as part of your collection. Coins may vary.
