Disney Pals visit the Catacombs of Alexandria

In 1991 Bhutan issued several souvenir sheets picturing Mickey and his pals exploring some of the world's wonders.  The sheet offered here pictures Mickey and Donald exploring Egypt's Catacombs of Alexandria.  Known as the Catcacombs of Kom el Shoqafa ("Mound of Shards"), the tunnels were first dug during the second century AD.  Used until the 4th century, the catacombs show Roman, Greek, and Egyptian influence.  They were not discovered until 1900, when a donkey accidentally fell down the access shaft.
