Kelp forests are areas under the sea where there is a lot of marine algae called kelp. The forests occur in temperate or arctic oceans along the coast. Many marine animals make their home in the long fronds (or leaves) of the kelp.
Southern sea otters and harbor seals find abundant prey in the kelp forests, and sea anemones and jeweled top snails add vibrant color.
The eleventh installment of the U.S. Postal Service’s Nature of America Series shows a kelp forest off the central coast of California.
