Own Local Short-Lived Western Express Company
This 1855 stamp was issued by the Penny Express Company of California. The 5¢ stamp was intended to cover the rate for a letter sent to cities in California. The stamp was issued in three colors, including this red stamp.
The company was owned by Henry Reed, a former agent for Adam’s & Co. Express and owner of Reed’s City Despatch Post, San Francisco’s first local post. He intended to have branches of his express company in San Francisco, Sacramento, Santa Clara, and other cities. The company didn’t last long because Reed fled to the East Coast after legal troubles began related to the bankruptcy of Adam’s & Co. California. As a result, only unused copies of this stamp are known.
