Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882)
Patriot and Politician

Born in Nice, Italy, then the capital of the French department of Alpes-Maritimes, Garibaldi became a merchant marine captain in 1832. While in Taganrog, Russia the following year, he met Giovanni Battista Cuneo, a member of the secret movement La Giovine Italia, or Young Italy. Garibaldi joined the society and agreed to dedicate his life to liberating his homeland from Austrian control.

After fleeing a Genoese death sentence, Garibaldi sailed to Brazil, where he joined the gaucho rebels in their fight for independence in the Republic of Rio Grande do Sul. While there, he met his future wife Anita and the two moved to Montevideo, Uruguay. In 1842, Garibaldi led the “Italian Legion” in the Uruguayan Civil War.

Garibaldi went on to participate in the Wars for Italian Independence and later served in the Italian parliament. He founded the League of Democracy in 1879, which supported universal suffrage, women’s rights, and maintaining a regular army.
