These stamps are from the South African Republic, better known as the Transvaal or Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (Z.A.R.). Specifically, they were issued by the Afrikaans-speaking Boer government during the late 19th century, before British annexation.

The inscription says "POSTZEGEL AFR. REPUBLIEK" (Postage – African Republic).  The Designs all feature the coat of arms of the South African Republic, with the image of a wagon, anchor, rifle, and the rising sun, symbolizing independence, trade, defense, and a hopeful future.

The motto “Eendragt maakt magt” (“Unity makes strength” in Dutch) also appears on each stamp.  

The denominations are:

    • 1 penny (Een Penny)

    • 2 pence (Twee Pence)

    • 3 pence (Drie Pence)

    • 4 pence (Vier Pence)

    • 6 pence (Zes Pence)

    • 1 shilling (Een Shilling)

    • Fractional values ½d and 2½d.

The Boer republic was later annexed by Britain and absorbed into the Transvaal Colony in 1900, eventually forming part of the Union of South Africa in 1910.
