US #148 Plate Proof – A Neat Part of Postage Stamp Production

This plate proof was printed on India paper.
Stamp #148 was printed by the National Bank Note Company. When the 1869 Pictorial series proved unpopular, this firm was asked to design a new series that pictures famous Americans. The National Bank Note Company printed these stamps with and without grills.
