Gerard David's painting "The Rest on the Flight into Egypt," held in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. The painting dates to around 1510 and depicts Mary with the infant Jesus during the Holy Family's escape from Bethlehem — a scene drawn from an apocryphal account in which the family paused to rest after three days of travel. David painted several versions of this subject during the later part of his career, and the National Gallery example is among the finest.

Gerard David was a Flemish painter born around 1460 who worked primarily in Bruges and became one of the leading figures of early Netherlandish painting. He is known for his quiet, precise compositions, delicate handling of landscape backgrounds, and careful attention to fabric and texture — all qualities visible even in the stamp's small reproduction. David succeeded Hans Memling as the leading painter in Bruges and held that position until his death in 1523. His work bridges the late medieval tradition and the broader influence of the Italian Renaissance that was beginning to reach the northern European painting world.

With nearly 874 million printed, this stamp saw extraordinarily wide use on holiday mail across the country in 1979 — one of the largest print runs of any U.S. commemorative of the era. The 1979 Christmas issue also included a companion stamp featuring a contemporary gingerbread Santa Claus ornament, giving collectors a traditional and a secular subject from the same issue date.
