This stamp honors French abolitionist writer, politician and journalist Victor Schœlcher.  He’s best known for his work towards abolishing slavery in France in 1848.  Schœlcher is pictured along with the year he was born and the year he died.  The symbol in the bottom left-hand corner, the Croix de Lorraine, represents French patriotism.  This symbol was used by the soldiers of the Free French Forces of the Résistance during WWII.  Lots of history packed in this stamp!
