In 1887, the American Bank Note Company produced three new stamps because of changes in color or design. This set contains those three stamps, each printed well over a century ago.
The stamps were printed on soft, porous paper, which the American Bank Note Company used between 1879 and 1894. This paper was made from wood pulp rather than the rag content paper used to make hard white paper. Soft, porous paper tends to be yellowish and appears mottled and opaque when held up to the light.
Stamp #212 – The 1¢ Franklin stamp was redesigned by the artists at the American Bank Note Company. The design had remained the same for 27 years.
Stamp #213 - In 1883, the first-class mail rate was reduced from 3¢ to 2¢. Soon after, Washington replaced Jackson on the 2¢ stamp, which was printed in red brown. When the stamp was reprinted in 1887, the color was changed to green.
Stamp #214 – The 3¢ stamp had been printed in green since 1870. To avoid confusion with the new 2¢ stamp, the color was changed to vermillion.
