There are two stamps from the 1986 Stamp Collecting set printed without black ink. Look closely at the 22¢ green and pink designs – they’re missing all the black details that normally sharpen the artwork. No “1869” on the newspaper, no magnifying glass handle, and no sharp outlines.
This error affects Scott 2198 and 2201, making them striking standouts in the block. It’s a great example of what can happen when one color drop doesn’t make it to the press – and why collectors love color-omitted errors like this.
The stamp booklets were issued to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the American Philatelic Society. This was the first time that U.S. commemoratives were ever issued in booklet form. It is also interesting to note that this illustrates the 1986 Presidents Miniature Sheets. This was the first time that a U.S. stamp pictured another U.S. stamp that had not been issued.
