Scarce and Old – Big Savings

High-value US #262 and #263 are scarce, hard-to-find stamps from 1894’s Bureau Issue.  They were issued in very small quantities.  And their high face values discouraged 19th-century collectors – making them scarce today in any condition.  Now you can own these important stamps and SAVE thousands off Mystic’s U.S. Stamp Catalog prices.

As you might expect of these classic stamps, unused US #262 and #263 will have one or two small imperfections.  These minor flaws don’t detract from the stamps’ beauty or collectability but make it possible for you to own them for far less than our catalog prices.

Issued in Very Limited Quantities

Because of their higher denominations, #262 and #263 were issued in much smaller quantities than other stamps in the series.  Other stamps of the day were issued in the millions.  Just 10,027 US #262 stamps and 6,251 #263 stamps were issued.

First Postage Stamps Produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing

As the 19th century drew to a close, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) won the contract to print America’s postage stamps.  The American Bank Note Company, which had produced the previous series, transferred the printing plates to the BEP.  However, times were changing, and America’s booming economy created a need for higher-denominated stamps.  To meet those needs, the BEP produced America’s first $2 and $5 definitive stamps.  (It continued to produce most US stamps for the next 75 years.)

At the time, these stamps would have been a significant purchase.  The $5 stamp alone would have been equal to $1,450 in today’s wages.  We can only guess how many of these stamps were preserved by collectors.  One thing is for certain – there were never enough to satisfy the needs of modern stamp collectors.  But you can be one of the lucky few to own them and save money.

Madison and Marshall – Founding Fathers

These two stamps honor prominent Founding Fathers.  James Madison played a pivotal role in creating the US Constitution and ratifying the Bill of Rights.  He oversaw the Louisiana Purchase and led America through the War of 1812.  John Marshall was the longest-serving chief justice of the Supreme Court.  Many historians consider him to be the most influential of all US jurists.  His impact can be seen in virtually every court decision today.  Marshall established the judicial review precedent.  He also helped shape the balance of power between the federal government and individual states.
