The 1¢ Pan-American Invert is one of the most well-known error stamps in US history. And, this is the nicest example we’ve had in a long time. The colors are rich, the image is sharp, and it still has its original gum. It looks great in person.
The stamp was issued in 1901 for the Pan-American Exposition, which celebrated America’s progress in transportation and industry. It was one of six stamps released for the event – the first US stamps of the 20th century, and the first bi-colored stamps since the 1869 Pictorials. The printing process made them prone to mistakes, and this one shows the steamer City of Alpena printed upside-down.
These inverts were found in at least 4 different post offices shortly after the stamps were released. Out of 450,000 sheets printed, only 10 sheets were discovered inverted. Thats just 1,000 stamps total, and many of those have been lost to the ravages of time. Most surviving examples today are very off-center or have heavily disturbed gum. This one stands out from the crowd.
We’re offering this #294a today for $9,500 – a full $2,000 under Scott value. There’s a light vertical crease and the bottom has been reperforated, but those small flaws don’t take away from the stamp’s beauty or impact. If anything, they just make it easier to own a great-looking example of this famous error.
